East Bengal FC are set to lock horns with Al Arabi in a crucial AFC Champions League 2 qualifier match on Wednesday (August 12).

The one-off West Region qualifier kicks off at 7:00 PM IST, with the winner securing a place in the AFC Champions League Two group stage. The loser will drop into the AFC Challenge League.

For East Bengal, the match represents another major step in a remarkable period for the club. The Red and Gold Brigade are the reigning Indian Super League champions, ending a 22-year wait for a top-level national title.

However, East Bengal enter the contest amid a period of transition. Title-winning coach Oscar Bruzon has departed, with experienced Spanish manager Antonio Lopez Habas taking charge.

The biggest concern for the home side is likely to be at the back. Spanish defender Nacho Monsalve is unavailable because of a knee injury, while Lalchungnunga is suspended. Chris Ikonomidis is also carrying a fitness concern, further limiting Habas’ options.

Al-Arabi arrive in Kolkata with considerable continental experience and the pedigree of a major Kuwaiti club. They finished runners-up in the 2025-26 Kuwait Premier League and possess several players capable of causing problems for East Bengal’s makeshift defence.

Palestine international Zaid Qunbar, Brazilian attacker Lucas Shallon and Nigerian winger Anayo Iwuala are among the attacking options available to the visitors. Ethiopian midfielder Kenean Markneh can add creativity in midfield, while Senegalese defender Joher Khadim Rassoul brings experience at the back.

Al-Arabi’s ability to exploit East Bengal’s defensive absences could prove decisive, particularly if the visitors can force the home side into defending deep.
