July 31 (UPI) — A military fighter jet crashed near Miramar Marine Corps Air Base in San Diego on Friday morning, officials said.
The pilot — assigned to 3rd Marine Air Wing, Marine Air Group 11 — ejected from the F-35B and was sent to a medical facility for evaluation, KUSI-TV in San Diego reported.
“The pilot ejected and has been recovered,” a spokesperson for the base told KGTV-TV in San Diego. “More information will be made available shortly.”
The cause of the incident at Miramar, which is located about 14 miles north of downtown San Diego, was under investigation.
Officials classified the crash as a “class A mishap,” the military’s most severe category of accidents, usually including fatalities or property damage totaling $2.5 million or more.
