July 31 (UPI) — The 3-year-olds go at it again at Saratoga, Colonial Downs renews the Arlington Million, Del Mar has a major Breeders’ Cup qualifier and Ellis Park makes a mark with a rich turf schedule in weekend horse racing.

On the global scene, they don’t call it “Glorious Goodwood” any longer, but Goodwood’s mid-summer meeting this week produced some thrilling results and candidates for late-season classics including the Breeders’ Cup and Arc weekend.

First, a look ahead.

Classic / dirt mile

Saturday’s $500,000 Grade II Jim Dandy at Saratoga has a small, but power-packed field, arguably topped by Renegade, who won the Grade I Arkansas Derby and then finished second in the Kentucky Derby and third in the Belmont.

Silent Tactic finished second in the Grade II Rebel and Grade I Arkansas Derby, and returns in good order off regular works.

Commandment won the Grade II Fountain of Youth and Grade I Florida Derby and then finished seventh in the Kentucky Derby and second in the Belmont.

Chip Honcho was third in the Preakness and won the Grade III Ohio Derby.

Also: Saturday’s $175,000 (Canadian) Grade III Seagram Cup on the Woodbine all-weather and Saturday’s $100,000 Petramalo Mile for 3-year-olds at Colonial Downs. Wednesday’s $150,000 Curlin at Saratoga was called off because of a deluge.

Distaff

Seismic Beauty won last year’s Grade I Clement L. Hirsch at Del Mar and seeks a repeat in Saturday’s $400,000 Grade I renewal.

The race is a “Win and You’re In” for the Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff, in which the Uncle Mo filly finished 11th, 39 lengths back of the winner, Scylla.

She did not get back to the races until May 30, when she weakened through the stretch in the Grade II Santa Margarita to finish third after pressing the pace.

The Santa Margarita winner and runner-up, Om N Joy and Simply Joking, are back to meet a few invaders from the east.

Sprint

Obliteration, second in the Group 3 Saudi Cup in February, is the 7-5 favorite in Friday’s $250,000 Grade II Amsterdam for 3-year-olds at Saratoga. He was last seen third in the Grade 1 Woody Stephens on June 6.

Ten are entered for Saturday’s $100,000 Reigh Count at Colonial Downs.

Filly & mare sprint

Mashalla seeks to improve her 2-for-3 record as favorite among nine in Saturday’s $100,000 Tyson Gilpin for 3-year-old fillies at Colonial Downs.

Turf

Burnham Square rides a three-race Kentucky winning streak into Saturday’s $1 million Grade I Arlington Million at Colonial Downs and accordingly is the 5-2 favorite.

The Liam’s Map gelding won the Grade I Blue Grass on the dirt at Keeneland last year and finished sixth in the Kentucky Derby and fifth in the Grade I Haskell before starting his transition to the green course.

Also getting early attention in the Million are converted all-weather specialist Dresden Row; last year’s first- and third-place finishers respectively, Fort Washington and Integration; and Grade I Manhattan Stakes runner-up Test Score, who looks dangerous in his third race off a layoff.

Saturday’s $500,000 Grade II Secretariat for 3-year-olds at Colonial Downs features Alpyland, a Vekoma gelding who has won three of his last four starts for trainer Mark Casse, including the American Derby at Churchill Downs in his last start.

Fifteen entered for 12 spots in Sunday’s $300,000 Green River Island at Ellis Park. The Cherie DeVaux-trained Brilliant Berti is the 3-1 favorite in a competitive heat. Sunday’s $250,000 Water Tower at Ellis Park is for 3-year-olds.

Filly & mare turf

Stellify would tower over 11 rivals in Saturday’s $500,000 Grade II Beverly D. at Colonial Downs if the Justify filly can return to the form that saw her run off four straight wins before finishing a troubled seventh in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf.

But she hasn’t run since then, so it’s an open question. The race retains a touch of its former international flavor with Gimme a Nother, a South African import who has come to hand nicely for trainer Graham Motion.

Saturday’s $225,000 Grade III Lake George at Saratoga has a field of nine 3-year-olds.

Sunday’s Ellis Park program includes the $250,000 Sunkissed at 1 mile and the $250,000 Pucker Up for 3-year-old fillies at 1 1/8 miles.

Thursday’s $250,000 Grade II Glens Falls at Saratoga was called off because the turf course was waterlogged.

Turf sprint

Ellis Park’s weekend includes Sunday’s $250,000 Tri-State Turf Sprint and Saturday’s $250,000 Hummingbird for fillies and mares. If you fund it, they will come, and 12 did just that.

Also on tap: Saturday’s $150,000 Van Clief and $150,000 Andy Guest for fillies and mares at Colonial Downs and Saturday’s $100,000 Incredible Revenge for fillies and mares at Monmouth Park.

Juvenile

Booked, Flight Command and Twinkle Town all get some attention in a field of six entered for Saturday’s $250,000 Grade II Saratoga Special. It’s 6 1/2 furlongs. Watch and learn.

Juvenile fillies

Sunday’s $225 Grade III Adirondack at Saratoga has nine, with the Brad Cox-trained Scarlet Begonia as the 5-2 favorite. It’s pretty wide open.

Juvenile turf

Saturday’s $200,000 Riverside Rush at Ellis Park drew an overflow field. with the Wesley Ward-trained Fanshell Beach the 9-5 favorite. The Cornich filly finished fifth in the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot in her last start.

Around the world, around the clock

England

Just as it appeared Tuesday’s Group 1 Goodwood Cup would play out as a rematch of the Ascot Gold Cup between Scandinavia and Trawlerman, a loose horse cut right in front of pacesetting Trawlerman just inside 3 furlongs from home. William Buick was forced to check, Scandinavia ran by and the race was over. Trawlerman gamely held second.

“There was a little bit of drama … It was one of those eventful races,” winning trainer Aidan O’Brien said, to which Trawlerman’s trainer, John Gosden added, “That’s the way it is. We got the worst of it and we went from being a length and a half in front to a length and a half behind. That’s racing.”

The thrills continued Wednesday as Bow Echo unleashed an unrelenting rally in the final furlong to run by old rival Gstaad and maintain his undefeated record with a 1/2-length victory in the Group 1 Sussex Stakes.

Opera Ballo, who set a testing pace, finished third, with Ten Bob Tony fourth.

Bow Echo, a Night of Thunder colt, threatened the course record while winning for the sixth time in six runs for trainer George Boughey.

“Fundamentally,” Boughey said, “we would like the horse to end up at the Breeders’ Cup at the end of the year. I think a mile round a bend there, with a strong pace, will suit him very well.” The race was a “Win and You’re In” for the Breeders’ Cup Mile.

Wednesday’s Group 3 HKJC World Pool Molecomb for 2-year-olds at Goodwood was a “Win and You’re In” for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint, and Pershaada was along in the final yards to grab that brass ring by 2 lengths from pacesetting Adonius. Both could show up at Keeneland.

Diamond Necklace rather easily extended her record to 6-for-6 with a 2 3/4-length victory over Friendly Soul in Thursday’s Group 1 Nassau for fillies and mares at Goodwood, a “Win and You’re In” for the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf.

The St Mark’s Basilica filly, with Ryan Moore up for Aidan O’Brien and the Coolmore “lads,” took the lead midway down the lane and wasn’t troubled thereafter in winning her fourth Group 1 race.

O’Brien indicated a return to France is a top-of-mind option for Diamond Necklace, with the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe “possible.”
