Chelsea enter a crucial spell in the Premier League with Champions League qualification on the line. Liam Rosenior accepts the race is tight, as his team sit fifth before visiting leaders Arsenal at Emirates Stadium on Sunday. Data from Opta’s supercomputer currently gives Chelsea a 20% chance of finishing in the top four this season.
The model is more optimistic about fifth place, which is also expected to bring a Champions League spot. In that case, Chelsea’s probability rises to 44%, reflecting both recent form and the demanding fixture list. Chelsea meet Arsenal first, then face Aston Villa, Newcastle United and Everton, with both Manchester clubs to follow after the March international break.
Rosenior stressed that Chelsea’s focus stays firmly on the next match rather than long-term projections. “Firstly, I take it game by game. I’ve had this conversation with you guys before. The Premier League is so difficult every week,” Rosenior said of Chelsea’s matches. “I don’t judge one game as hard as the other. There are different tactical things you can work on.”
Rosenior underlined satisfaction with Chelsea’s early-season results while insisting improvement is still possible. “I’m really happy with the group and the start we have made. We’ve won eight out of 12, and it should be 10 out of 12. That’s not bad. I’d love to see what this supercomputer looks like. I don’t think about it in that way.”
Chelsea’s record away to league leaders highlights the scale of the task at Arsenal. Chelsea have lost eight of their last nine away Premier League games against sides starting the day top of the table. The one victory in that sequence was a 2-1 win against Manchester City in May 2021, which offers limited recent encouragement.
Recent league meetings with Arsenal have also favoured Mikel Arteta’s side. Chelsea are winless in their last eight Premier League matches against Arsenal, with three draws and five defeats in that period. This is Chelsea’s longest such run against Arsenal since a 19-game sequence between 1995 and 2005.
Arsenal have been especially strong at home against Chelsea in recent seasons. Arsenal have won the last three league matches between the teams at Emirates Stadium. The last time Arsenal achieved a longer home winning streak against Chelsea was between 1990 and 1994, when they recorded five consecutive league victories.
Chelsea Champions League race shaped by Eberechi Eze and Viktor Gyokeres form
Two of Arsenal’s summer signings, Eberechi Eze and Viktor Gyokeres, arrive in strong form before facing Chelsea. Eze scored twice in the north London derby and has a striking scoring pattern. Eze has scored each of the last 11 Premier League goals in the capital, highlighting comfort in London fixtures.
All six of Eze’s league goals for Arsenal this season have come in London derbies. Those goals came across meetings with Crystal Palace and Tottenham. Eze has one goal against Crystal Palace and five against Tottenham. That total is the highest by any player in a single Premier League season without also scoring outside London derbies.
Gyokeres is also contributing heavily for Arsenal in 2026 across all competitions. Gyokeres has scored more goals in 2026 than any other Premier League player, in all competitions. Eight of Gyokeres’ 15 goals for Arsenal have arrived in this calendar year. That surge adds further threat as Chelsea approach Sunday’s match.
Rosenior knows both forwards well and expects a demanding contest for Chelsea. “I worked with Viktor at Brighton’s Under-23s. Viktor has started to build his confidence and has shown he can score goals for Arsenal,” Rosenior added. “Eze, I have come up against many times. We know it’s going to be a very difficult game, but they know it’s going to be a difficult game for them as well.”
Rosenior wants Chelsea’s players in the best possible condition for this sequence. “I want the players to be as physically and mentally fresh as possible. They’ve looked really good in training this week. We need to stay calm and consistent in our process,” Rosenior said. “This club should be in the Champions League, this club is a Champions League club.”
Rosenior also placed Chelsea’s current position in context, compared with the situation on arrival. “When I took over, we were eighth. We’re now in the race.” That progress frames the importance of the coming league fixtures, as well as the Champions League campaign, to Chelsea’s targets for 2026.
Rosenior recently learned that Chelsea will face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League last 16. The draw pairs Chelsea with the defending champions, adding another demanding tie to the calendar. Rosenior met PSG three times while managing Strasbourg in Ligue 1, winning once, drawing once and losing once.
Rosenior welcomed the opportunity to test Chelsea against the Ligue 1 side later in the season. “So excited. PSG are a fantastic team. I have experience of playing against them in France. I have always admired them. Luis Enrique has done an incredible job,” Rosenior said. “These are the games you live for, games that you come into football for. It’s going to be a great tie. But we’ve got another three games before that I need to focus on.”
Across both domestic and European fronts, Chelsea now confront a demanding schedule that will define the campaign. High-profile league games against Arsenal and other rivals will directly affect Champions League qualification hopes. The later tie with PSG adds another test, as Rosenior aims to keep Chelsea competitive on both fronts through 2026.
