July 28 (UPI) — Hurricane Genevieve regained Category 4 strength Tuesday evening as it moved west of Baja California, the National Hurricane Center said.
The storm was located about 575 miles west-southwest of the southern tip of Baja California, the NHC said in its 5 p.m. PDT update. It was packing maximum sustained winds of 130 mph, an increase of 10 mph from a few hours earlier, and was moving west-northwest at 9 mph.
No coastal watches or warnings were in effect, though forecasters said swells generated by Genevieve were affecting portions of the southwestern coast of Mexico and the Baja California Peninsula.
“These swells are likely to persist for a few more days, and could cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions,” the NHC said.
Although it was a major hurricane, forecasters expected it to steadily weaken over the next several days, during which it is forecast to move northwest to west-northwest. It’s expected to weaken to a tropical storm by Thursday evening.
