July 25 (UPI) — Eight people, believed to be family members, were found dead inside a burning house in Michigan, some of whom had been shot.

Ottawa County, Mich., police and firefighters responded to a residential fire around 11:40 a.m. on Friday and, after putting out the flames, discovered the bodies of two adults and six children inside the house, WZZM-TV and WOOD-TV reported.

Autopsies were expected to be performed on Monday on the two adults, who were in the 40s, and six children, who ranged in age from 5 years old to 15 years old.

The eight people are believed to have lived in the house and are family members.

“Units made entry inside to battle the fire because there was smoke showing from the residence,” Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Jacob Sparks said during a press conference, The Guardian reported.

“When they got inside, they noticed that there were several people deceased inside the home,” Sparks said. “Some of the victims did have gunshot wounds.”

Officials were first called to the house, located in Grand Haven Township, which is about 20 miles south of Muskegon, Mich., around 8:30 a.m. on reports about smoke in the area, but did not find a fire.

About two hours later, however, they got calls about white smoking rising from the house, put the fire out and found the eight deceased people inside.

“We don’t have cause of death at this point,” Sparks said. “I don’t know if there were other means that were used.”

Sparks told reporters that police and fire units are investigating the situation, and that the deaths could be attributed to a murder-suicide.
