March 20 (UPI) — Production is underway on Netflix’s Assassin’s Creed live-action series.
The streaming service announced Friday that filming has officially begun in Rome.
Assassin’s Creed is based on the Ubisoft video game franchise, which imagines a conflict between the Order of Assassins and the Knights Templar throughout the centuries.
The Netflix series will take place in ancient Rome in 64 A.D. and star Toby Wallace, Lola Petticrew, Laura Marcus, Tanzyn Crawford, Zachary Hart, Claes Bang and Nabhaan Rizwan.
Netflix first announced its partnership with Ubisoft in 2020, describing the show as “an epic, genre-bending” series. The streaming service said in July that Robert Patino and David Wiener will serve as series creators, showrunners and executive producers.
“Assassin’s Creed is a high-octane thriller centered on the secret war between two shadowy factions — one set on determining mankind’s future through control and manipulation, while the other fights to preserve free will,” an official synopsis reads. “The series follows its characters across pivotal historical events as they battle to shape humanity’s destiny.”
Netflix has yet to announce a release date for the series. Its previous video game adaptations include The Witcher, Arcane, Castlevania and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.
