New Delhi, July 22: Veteran goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa has announced his retirement from professional football, bringing the curtain down on an illustrious football career that spanned more than two decades. A career that saw remarkable highs, Ochoa established himself as one of Mexico’s greatest-ever goalkeepers.

The 41-year-old confirmed the decision on Tuesday through a heartfelt message on social media, ending speculation that he might continue playing at club level after previously indicating the 2026 FIFA World Cup would be his final international tournament.

“I gave it my all; I left everything on the field for my clubs and the national team, and today I hang up my gloves,” Ochoa wrote. “Being a goalkeeper means knowing you might wait 90 minutes for a single moment when everything depends on you. And when that moment arrives, you cannot hesitate.”

Guillermo Ochoa: Record Books

Ochoa leaves the game with a unique place in football history. He was named in Mexico’s squad for six FIFA World Cups, joining only Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi in achieving that milestone. He was Mexico’s first-choice goalkeeper at the 2014, 2018 and 2022 editions of the tournament.

His professional journey began with Club América, where he made his top-flight debut in February 2004. After seven seasons with the Liga MX giants, Ochoa moved to French side Ajaccio in 2011, becoming the first Mexican-born goalkeeper to play in Europe.
His European career also included spells with Málaga, Granada, Standard Liège, Salernitana, AVS Futebol and AEL Limassol, while he returned to América between 2019 and 2022.

“I never imagined how far a dream could take me. Today, I can only look back with pride and say: Thank you,” Ochoa wrote. “I take with me the affection of millions and the peace of mind that comes with knowing I gave everything for Mexico.”

Although he served primarily as backup to Raúl Rangel during the recent World Cup, head coach Javier Aguirre gave the veteran goalkeeper a final appearance, bringing him on for the last 13 minutes of Mexico’s group-stage match against the Czech Republic.
Following the final whistle, Ochoa kissed the goalposts at the Estadio Azteca, where his senior career began, before sharing an emotional embrace with teammates. After the stadium had emptied, he returned alone to the center circle for one final farewell.

Glittering Club Career Of Ochoa

At club level, Ochoa won the Liga MX Clausura title with Club América in 2005 and lifted the Belgian Cup with Standard Liège. Internationally, he helped Mexico win six CONCACAF Gold Cup titles and claimed a bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Ochoa retires as one of the most decorated and iconic figures in Mexican football, remembered for his longevity, consistency and memorable performances on the sport’s biggest stage.
