March 19 (UPI) — James Comey, the former director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, has been subpoenaed by the Department of Justice as part of its investigation into a “grand conspiracy” against President Donald Trump.
Comey is one of more than 130 people to have been subpoenaed as the DOJ investigates an alleged conspiracy by Democratic politicians and officials to undermine him since he was first elected to the White House in 2016, Axios reported.
The investigation specifically is focused on the 2017 Intelligence Community Assessment on Russia’s alleged interference in the 2016 presidential election, Fox News reported.
Comey, as well as former CIA Director John Brennan, have been under criminal investigation by the Trump administration over the 2017 ICA since current CIA Director John Ratcliffe referred both to the FBI for prosecution because it included information from the now-discredited Steele Dossier.
The dossier was a collection of unverified opposition information that was gathered for then-presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s campaign.
A review found that, in addition to Brennan pushing for information from the dossier to be included in the ICA, the report was rushed, did not follow proper agency standards and “ultimately undermined the credibility of a key judgment.”
Previous prosecutions of Comey and Brennan — one in Virginia and the other in Pennsylvania — both failed, but the new cases are expected to be brought in Florida, where a Trump-appointed judge and potentially Trump-leaning grand jury may lead to a different outcome.
Brennan, Comey and all of the Obama- and Biden-era officials that have been subpoenaed as part of the DOJ’s investigation have all called it politically motivated.
