A ferry carrying 116 passengers has sunk off the coast of Guyana with 53 people so far rescued, local authorities have said.
The MV Barima capsized near Iron Punt, on its route from the capital Georgetown to Port Kaituma on Saturday.
A distress call was received at 23:01 local time (03:01GMT), triggering a search operation involving state and private boats, Public Works Minister Juan Edghill said in a statement posted on social media.
“There is an active search and rescue operation that is taking place, and we pray for the safety of all,” Edghill said on Sunday, AFP news agency reports.
Emergency teams expect to find more survivors as operations continue, Guyana Prime Minister Mark Phillips told AFP. He added that those rescued so far include both passengers and crew.
Three assistance centres have been set up for relatives of those rescued and passengers still missing, Phillips said on Facebook.
The names of those onboard will be released once rescue operations and medical checks are complete, he added.
The MV Barima was built in 1939 and is 40m (131ft) long, according to a listing on VesselFinder.
Edghill said it was fitted with 250 life jackets, two rigid life crafts and six inflatable life crafts.
