Argentina will take to the field in their navy blue away kit for today’s FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-final against England at Atlanta Stadium.

The decision, approved by FIFA, combines practical kit regulations with deep-rooted superstition that has become part of Argentine football folklore.

Lionel Messi and his team have qualified for their second semifinal in a row, and the defending champions will be aiming to book their place in the final. On the other hand, the Three Lions are aiming for their place in the final for the first time in 60 years.

Why are Argentina Wearing Deep Blue Jersey vs England?

The choice of the dark blue jersey is no coincidence. It is the same colour Argentina wore in their two most famous World Cup victories over England. In the 1986 quarter-final in Mexico, Diego Maradona produced the iconic “Hand of God” goal and the “Goal of the Century” as Argentina triumphed 2-1. Twelve years later, in the 1998 round of 16 in France, Argentina again wore blue and advanced on penalties after a thrilling 2-2 draw.

In contrast, Argentina have lost both World Cup meetings with England when wearing their traditional sky-blue and white striped home kit — in 1966 and 2002. This historical pattern has turned the navy blue shirt into a powerful talisman for the Albiceleste.

The current away kit features a black base adorned with swirling blue patterns inspired by fileteado porteño, the traditional decorative art of Buenos Aires. The strip was used once earlier in the tournament during a group-stage victory, further boosting its positive aura among players and fans.

FIFA prefers clear colour contrast for television audiences. With England wearing their traditional all-white home kit, Argentina’s request to use the navy blue alternate strip was easily granted. While bracket rules might have allowed the home stripes, the Argentine Football Association actively pushed for the blue jersey to harness the historical “luck” factor.
