Egypt right-back Mohamed Hany has become the first player since 1966 World Cup to score two own goals in a single men’s FIFA World Cup tournament.
The FIFA World Cup 2026 has seen the defender inadvertently hand opponents crucial equalisers. Hany first diverted the ball into his own net to allow Belgium to level their match against Egypt.
In Friday’s clash with Australia, he repeated the feat during a frantic set-piece scramble, as shown in match footage from the stadium where Australian players celebrated the deflection past the Egyptian goalkeeper.
The incidents have drawn a mix of sympathy and dark humour on social media, with many noting the misfortune of a player who has otherwise contributed solidly for the Pharaohs. Own goals often stem from desperate defending under pressure in crowded penalty areas, especially on crosses and corners, where deflections can turn intended clearances into nightmares.
While Egypt’s campaign continues, the defender will hope to put the errors behind him as the tournament progresses. This World Cup 2026 has already seen 13 own goals, the most in a single edition of the tournament.
In the Round of 32 clash against Australia, Egypt took the lead with Emam Ashour in the 13th minute. The Pharaos ended the half with a lead, but Hany’s own goal has turned the match back to level terms. At the time of publishing, the encounter continues with 1-1 scoreline at extra time.
