Thapelo Maseko wrote his name into South African football history on Wednesday night when his powerful left-footed strike in the 63rd minute secured a 1-0 victory over South Korea at Estadio BBVA and propelled Bafana Bafana into the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup for the first time.
Entering the decisive Group A clash with just one point from their opening two matches, a 2-0 loss to hosts Mexico and a 1-1 draw with Czechia, South Africa knew only a win would guarantee progression. Maseko, the 22-year-old winger on loan at AEL Limassol from Mamelodi Sundowns, delivered exactly what was required.
The goal came from a swift counter-attack. After South Korea had dominated possession in the first half without creating clear chances, a quick transition saw the ball fall to Maseko inside the penalty area. He controlled it superbly and unleashed a low, driven shot that beat goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu at the near post.
South Africa defended resolutely for the remaining 27 minutes, with goalkeeper Ronwen Williams making key interventions to preserve the clean sheet. The final whistle sparked wild celebrations among the South African players and travelling supporters as coach Hugo Broos’ side confirmed second place in the group behind Mexico on four points.
Maseko, who has emerged as one of South Africa’s brightest attacking talents, showed the composure and quality that have marked his rapid rise. The Sebokeng-born forward, who helped South Africa qualify for the tournament by topping their CAF group in October 2025, now leads the team into the Round of 32.
South Africa only 7th African Nation to World Cup Knockouts
The Bafana Bafana are only the 7th nation from the African continent to progress to World Cup knockouts. The other nations are – Morocco, Cameroon, Nigeria, Senegal, Ghana and Algeria. Morocco still holds the record of the best African performance when they reached the semifinals in 2022.
For the South African team, the Round of 32 is up next and they will take on one of the co-hosts Canada, on June 28 at the Los Angeles Stadium.
