Andrea Pirlo believes coaching opinions on his work have been unfair, despite meeting targets at several clubs. The former Italy midfielder is now leading United FC in the UAE second tier and has guided the team to promotion.
Pirlo’s view is that his record shows consistent success, even if decisions by clubs suggest otherwise. Speaking to SportWeek, Pirlo stressed that expectations have been met at Juventus, Fatih Karagumruk, Sampdoria and now United FC.
Reflecting on his bench career, Pirlo said: “If I look at my career as a coach, I’ve always reached the targets,” before listing achievements from Italy to Turkiye and the United Arab Emirates.
During the 2020-21 campaign at Juventus, Pirlo’s side finished fourth in Serie A and secured a Champions League place. The season also brought the Supercoppa Italiana and Coppa Italia titles, yet Juventus decided to part company afterwards.
Pirlo argued that his objectives in Turin were clear. “At Juventus, I was asked to qualify for the Champions League. Done. Plus I won the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa.” He then reflected on the abrupt break that followed.
After leaving Juventus, Pirlo stepped away from coaching for one season. Pirlo explained: “I left and didn’t coach for a year; I dont know why. Actually, I know, but I prefer not to say it.”
Next came Fatih Karagumruk in Turkiye, where Pirlo delivered a historic finish. Pirlo said: “Then I went to Karagumruk and finished seventh, a result that had never been achieved by that club, with an unbeaten record.”
Returning to Italy, Pirlo took charge of Sampdoria in Serie B. “At Sampdoria, we reached the Serie B play-off, as demanded. The following season, I was sacked after just three games.” Pirlo felt that decision did not match the results.
Pirlo now works in the Middle East with United FC and points to more success. “This season at United, they asked for promotion, and I achieved it.” Summing up his view, Pirlo added: “I’ve always brought the results, but if somebody doesn’t like me, it’s another story.”
