Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens is thriving in the Premier League, where the physical style suits Lammens’ game and mentality. The 22-year-old has already helped Manchester United stay in the Champions League race, while Opta figures show Lammens has prevented 5.5 league goals this season.
That xGoT total is the highest of any goalkeeper in the Premier League so far in the 2024-25 campaign. It underlines how quickly Lammens has settled at Old Trafford, after arriving to compete with Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir for the starting place.
Lammens’ impact is especially clear at set pieces, an area that often troubles Premier League defences. Against Everton on Monday, Everton forced 10 corners, yet Lammens made first contact on five of them, matching the best single-game mark by any goalkeeper this season.
The data on crosses since the start of the 2024-25 season also highlights that strength. Lammens has claimed 7.3% of crosses faced in the Premier League, compared with 4.1% for Onana and 5.3% for Bayindir over the same period at Manchester United.
Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo likened Everton’s set-piece approach to WWE’s “Royal Rumble”, with heavy contact and constant blocking. Lammens, however, sees those crowded situations as part of the job and an area where Lammens can make a difference for Manchester United.
Lammens explained that this demanding style is not new across the division. “I think it’s been all season like this,” he said. “For me, it’s just the way it is. It is the Premier League.”
Lammens described the contact around corners and free-kicks in vivid terms. “It’s a bit of a war in the 16 [metre penalty area]. It’s also one of my strengths, so sometimes I like the challenge as well. I enjoy it as well, getting out of my comfort zone a little bit and dealing with those situations because now, even though there are a lot of bodies next to me, I still come for crosses. That also gives me a good feeling that I’m doing well and doing those things well. Of course, there has to be certain rules. I mean, you can’t get to the point where it’s too much. That’s something that the Premier League has to look towards.”
Those comments show how Lammens balances enjoyment of the contest with concern about limits. The goalkeeper welcomes contact and pressure but also believes referees and the league must watch for incidents that cross the line during Premier League matches.
Lammens’ consistent decision to come for high balls, even under heavy pressure, has boosted Manchester United’s defensive record. With set-piece numbers among the strongest in the Premier League and leading the division in goals prevented, Lammens is playing a central part in Manchester United’s push for Champions League qualification.
