Pope Leo’s return to the Vatican was delayed on Friday after a technical issue grounded his papal plane in Tenerife following a week-long Spanish tour, prompting the King of Spain to offer a Falcon jet.
The Spanish government stated the king’s air force plane would fly the Pope and several delegation members to Rome.
The remaining delegation and reporters would travel on another aircraft from Madrid.
Leo had already boarded his Iberia-operated flight, seen off by King Felipe and other Spanish dignitaries, and was then escorted back to the terminal by the king.
After the Pope disembarked, the captain announced the engine likely failed to start due to wind, confirming the issue couldn’t be resolved immediately and passengers had to leave.
Iberia stated the plane experienced an unspecified technical issue, with a replacement aircraft being sent from Madrid to complete the Rome journey on Friday.
By traveling to the Canary Islands, Leo is fulfilling a wish of Pope Francis to minister to the many migrants who arrive on the Spanish archipelago after risking their lives to reach Europe from Africa.
