The first leg of the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League Round of 16 has concluded, leaving a trail of tactical masterclasses, shocking collapses, and a notably difficult week for the Premier League’s contingent.

As the dust settles on the opening encounters, several of Europe’s heavyweights have placed one foot in the quarter-finals, while others face a daunting uphill battle.

Real Madrid 3-0 Manchester City

In the week’s most anticipated clash, Real Madrid delivered a statement of intent at the Santiago Bernabeu. Federico Valverde was the architect of City’s downfall, netting a sublime 22-minute hat-trick in the first half to leave Pep Guardiola’s side reeling. Despite a missed second-half penalty by Vinicius Junior, Madrid head to Manchester with a commanding three-goal cushion.

How it will be decided: City must score at least three at the Etihad to force extra time; Madrid simply need to avoid a collapse.

Paris Saint-Germain 5-2 Chelsea

Atalanta 1-6 Bayern Munchen

Bayern Munich effectively ended their tie as a contest in Bergamo. A relentless offensive display saw braces from Michael Olise and goals from Jamal Musiala and Serge Gnabry. Atalanta struggled to contain the German side’s high press and now face a purely ceremonial second leg in Munich.

How it will be decided: Bayern need only to manage the game at home to confirm their quarter-final spot.

Atletico de Madrid 5-2 Tottenham Hotspur

Diego Simeone’s men capitalized on a disastrous start by Spurs, racing into a 4-0 lead within the first 25 minutes. Spurs’ young goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky was at the heart of two howlers and was taken off after just 17 minutes. Although Tottenham pulled two back through Pedro Porro and Dominic Solanke, Julian Alvarez’s clinical finishing has given them a significant buffer heading into the return leg in London.

How it will be decided: Spurs must win by three goals at home to level the aggregate.

Prediction: Atletico de Madrid to progress.

Bayer Leverkusen 1-1 Arsenal

The Premier League leaders maintained their unbeaten European streak but were forced to dig deep in Germany. After Robert Andrich headed Leverkusen in front, a late Kai Havertz penalty, converted against his former club, ensured the Gunners returned to North London on level terms.

How it will be decided: A straight shootout at the Emirates; the winner on the night takes the tie.

Newcastle United 1-1 Barcelona

St. James’ Park witnessed a tactical chess match. Newcastle appeared to have secured a narrow victory through Harvey Barnes, only for Lamine Yamal to rescue a draw for the Catalans with a 96th-minute penalty. Both sides will feel they have the quality to settle this in Spain.

How it will be decided: Barcelona hold home advantage for the decider, where any win will suffice.

Galatasaray 1-0 Liverpool

In a raucous Istanbul atmosphere, Mario Lemina’s early header proved the difference. Liverpool dominated possession but were thwarted by a heroic performance from Galatasaray’s goalkeeper, Cakir. The Reds now face the familiar task of a European comeback under the Anfield lights.

Bodo/Glimt 3-0 Sporting CP
