Antoine Griezmann confirmed that a move away from Atletico Madrid will not happen before June. The forward stated that staying at the club until the end of the current season is the plan. The confirmation followed a standout Champions League display against Tottenham, during which Griezmann again showed influence and leadership for Atletico Madrid on a major European stage.
The 34-year-old had been strongly linked with MLS side Orlando City in recent weeks. That speculation intensified as Griezmann continued to perform at a high level for Atletico Madrid. The French forward addressed those rumours directly after the match, stressing enjoyment of life at the club and a desire to complete the season before any decisions are discussed.
Griezmann played a central role in Atletico Madrid’s 5-2 victory over Spurs in the Champions League. The forward struck the second goal of the night and later set up Julian Alvarez for the fifth. That result put Atletico Madrid in a strong position to qualify for the quarter-finals and underlined the team’s attacking threat in this season’s competition.
“Im very happy here, enjoying it a lot, and what I do on the field speaks for itself,” said the 34-year-old. “Well see, but the idea is to go all the way [until the end of the season] and then everyone else can talk.”
Diego Simeone welcomed Griezmann’s public commitment and highlighted the forward’s wider importance for Atletico Madrid. The head coach stressed both historical significance and current influence, while also pointing to the collective responsibility to support Griezmann. Simeone suggested that careful management will be vital if the club is to maximise this Champions League campaign.
“Antoine’s explanation makes me happy. He knows how important he is to Atletico’s history. I hope he has the chance to finish as he deserves, in the best possible way. We have to take care of him so he can help us and we can have an extraordinary season. It’s been fantastic, and we need him as he is, in this moment of vision, talent, running, and we need him as he is.”
Atletico Madrid’s attacking form in the Champions League continued against Tottenham, adding to a strong season. The team has now scored 29 goals in the competition, more than any other side this year. This match also marked the first time Atletico Madrid scored at least five goals in a Champions League knockout tie.
Atletico Madrid led 4-0 within 22 minutes, overwhelming Spurs with fast attacks and decisive finishing. That timeline was the second-earliest a team has gone 4+ goals ahead in a Champions League match. The only quicker example came when Real Madrid went 4-0 up after 20 minutes against Dinamo Zagreb in November 2011.
Despite that dominant opening spell, Simeone expressed frustration with aspects of the second-half display. The coach felt that the level of control and intensity dipped after the break. Simeone pointed to the impact of changes from the bench and suggested those introductions did not meet the usual standard expected at Atletico Madrid.
“We were better in the first half. Not so much in the second,” said the Atleti boss. “The substitutions didn’t work as well as usual; they were less intense, aggressive, and involved. They couldn’t have the impact we wanted. Now we wait for Saturday’s game.”
Griezmann’s confirmed intention to remain at Atletico Madrid until season’s end gives Simeone clarity for upcoming fixtures. The forward’s form, combined with Atletico Madrid’s scoring record in this Champions League campaign, keeps expectations high. Attention now turns to maintaining consistency in domestic and European matches, starting with the league game on Saturday.
