May 19 (UPI) — Authorities in North Carolina are attempting to wrangle 10 wild mustangs on the loose that have been spotted running on busy roads and highways.
Iredell County Animal Services confirmed the horses have been spotted in various locations around the county since escaping from a local property on May 11, and one was even caught on camera running through the middle of Interstate 10.
Six of the horses were spotted Monday night in a cornfield along Eufala Road, where authorities had spread hay in the hopes of attracting the equines to the area.
A local non-profit assisting with the capture efforts said the wild horses were likely purchased from the Bureau of Land Management in Monroe.
The bureau manages and protects wild horses in 10 western states, and the horses are sometimes sold for $25 each to owners who need to meet certain qualifications to ensure the animals will be cared for humanely.
County officials said the owner of the horses, who has not been identified, will be charged with failing to properly secure the animals and failing to cooperate with capture efforts.
