Pep Guardiola has moved to cool talk about an early exit from Manchester City, stressing that the contract still has one season left. Guardiola spoke before City face Chelsea in the FA Cup final on Saturday, a match that will be City’s 24th appearance at Wembley Stadium under Guardiola across 10 years.
The City manager signed his current deal in November 2024, keeping Guardiola at the Etihad Stadium until 2027. Despite that contract, speculation has grown that Guardiola might depart before it ends. Asked whether Saturday’s showpiece could be Guardiola’s final game in charge of City, the response was firm.
Guardiola replied: “No way. I have one more year [on my] contract.” That commitment comes as City chase another domestic trophy, having already lifted the EFL Cup by beating Arsenal in March. Victory against Chelsea would secure both domestic cups for the second time under Guardiola.
City’s current opportunity mirrors the 2018-19 campaign, when Guardiola’s side completed a domestic treble. Across English football history, winning both domestic cups in one season has happened only six times. Arsenal achieved it in 1992-93, Liverpool in 2000-01 and 2021-22, and Chelsea in 2006-07, alongside City’s 2018-19 success.
City are already the first club to reach four straight FA Cup finals. Guardiola’s side beat Manchester United in 2023, then lost to Manchester United in 2024 and Crystal Palace in 2025. Across the last 23 FA Cup matches, City have won 21, with those two final defeats the only losses.
Since the 2016-17 season, City and Chelsea have dominated FA Cup statistics. Both sides lead the competition for wins, goals and clean sheets in that period, underlining the scale of Saturday’s meeting at Wembley between the two clubs.
| Team | FA Cup wins since 2016-17 | Goals scored | Clean sheets |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manchester City | 45 | 159 | 28 |
| Chelsea | 37 | 111 | 26 |
Guardiola has collected 19 trophies with City so far. The haul includes six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, five EFL Cups and three Community Shields. City have also won one Champions League, one UEFA Super Cup and one FIFA Club World Cup during Guardiola’s spell in Manchester.

Pep Guardiola Manchester City FA Cup final legacy debate
Asked whether this period at City could be defined as greatness, Guardiola did not reject the label. Guardiola said: "Yeah, of course, 19 titles in 10 years is not bad. They know they don’t need to wait until I’m leaving, they know I have been fun. So 19 titlesfighting for 20 in 10 yearsit’s not bad, honestly."
Guardiola’s record means Saturday’s final offers more than another chance for silverware; it could bring a 20th major trophy. City’s sustained success, strong statistics in the FA Cup and Guardiola’s clear statement on the remaining year of the contract all point to further targets still in sight.
