May 10 (UPI) — Bill Posey, a longtime Republican congressman from Florida who retired last year, has died, Rep. Mike Haridopolos announced Sunday. Posey was 78.
Posey died Saturday “surrounded by the love of his family,” Haridopolos said.
The cause of death was not mentioned.
“Bill dedicated his life to serving the people of Florida and our nation with integrity, humility and an unwavering commitment to public service. He approached public office not as a path to personal recognition but as a solemn responsibility to serve others honorably, faithfully and effectively,” Haridopolos said in a statement.
“His legacy will endure through the countless lives he touched, the communities he strengthened and the values he championed throughout his years of service.”
Posey represented Florida in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2009 to 2025, ending his political career when he unexpectedly decided not to seek re-election. Haridopolos succeeded him as the representative from Florida’s Republican-leaning Eighth Congressional District.
House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., was among Republican politicians to offer their condolences online.
“Bill Posey was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and public servant who dedicated his career to giving back to his Florida community,” Johnson said in a social media statement.
“Bill was a genuinely good man and a faithful friend, and we are blessed to have served alongside him.”
During his time in Congress, Posey served on the House Financial Services Committee and the House Science, Space and Technology Committee.
He was also a member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus.
“Your principled leadership and commitment to liberty left a lasting impact on our nation,” the House Freedom Caucus said in a statement.
“We will forever remember this dedicated patriot and the values he championed.”
