Paris Saint-Germain visit Bayern Munich aiming to finish the job and reach the Champions League final, with Warren Zaire-Emery confident the team’s attacking style will again produce goals after the nine-goal first leg. The midfielder also stressed that PSG understand the defensive risks involved against the Bundesliga champions.
The Ligue 1 side lead the semi-final after a 5-4 victory at the Parc des Princes, where Luis Enrique’s players once held a three-goal cushion. Bayern fought back to keep the tie open, leaving the second leg finely balanced despite PSG’s one-goal advantage.
Champions League history offers a warning for PSG. Only one team has scored five goals in the first leg of a knockout tie and later gone out. That was Manchester City against Monaco in the 2016-17 last 16, when City won 5-3 at home but lost 3-1 away and exited on away goals.
PSG also carry a difficult record in Munich. They have suffered more away defeats against Bayern, five, than against any other opponent in the European Cup or Champions League. Among clubs they have visited more than once, only at Manchester City, three losses from three, and Real Madrid, three losses from four, do they post a worse away percentage than at Bayern, five defeats in seven.
Despite those figures, PSG enter the second leg as the tournament’s leading scorers this season with 43 goals. Zaire-Emery believes that strength in attack can again prove decisive. “We’re ready and will try to reach the final,” said the youngster, underlining the squad’s focus on progression.
Zaire-Emery outlined the tactical demands for PSG in Munich, pointing to both pressing and organisation without the ball. “I think well have to do the same as in the first leg. We defended well, but still conceded four goals. We’ll need to defend higher up in their half. Well have to double up or even triple up on them, and everyone will need to put in the effort together. We’ll try to impose our game plan, press like we do in every match, and win back as many balls as possible. This team is built to attack, and thats what we’ll try to do. We’re expecting the same kind of match maybe even tougher.”
The winners of the tie will meet Arsenal on 30 May, after Mikel Arteta’s side beat Atletico Madrid in the other semi-final. PSG’s attacking record, Bayern’s strong home form and the narrow first-leg scoreline combine to set up a tense Champions League night in Munich, with a place in the final at stake.
