Ipswich Town sealed automatic promotion to the Premier League with a 3-0 home victory over QPR, finishing second in the Championship. George Hirst played a decisive role at Portman Road, scoring the opener and assisting the second goal, as Ipswich delivered under pressure on the final day.
Before kick-off, Ipswich knew second place depended on bettering the results of Millwall and Middlesbrough. The tension around Portman Road faded quickly, as the hosts surged ahead inside three minutes and maintained control, while rivals won or dropped points elsewhere to complete the dramatic season picture.
The breakthrough came early when a low cross from Leif Davies ran across the QPR goalmouth. Confusion in the six-yard box allowed George Hirst to react first and stab the ball in during the third minute, giving Ipswich the perfect start and settling the crowd’s early nerves.
QPR then tried to build from the back but were punished in the ninth minute. Ipswich pressed high, forced a turnover, and launched a swift counter. Hirst collected possession and slid a pass to Jaden Philogene, who stayed calm and slotted a composed finish beyond Joe Walsh for 2-0.
After half-time, Ipswich continued to threaten, with Hirst and Philogene both denied by goalkeeper Joe Walsh. QPR created a rare late opening when Paul Smyth drew a sharp save from Christian Walton. The home side still looked more dangerous, and there was another decisive moment in the closing minutes.
QPR again lost the ball near their own box in the final stages. Jack Taylor’s initial shot was blocked by Walsh, but the rebound dropped kindly for Kasey McAteer. McAteer reacted quickly and drove the ball into the net, completing the 3-0 scoreline and sparking loud celebrations in the stands.
Championship table, rivals and Ipswich Town promotion context
Elsewhere, Millwall finished one point behind Ipswich after Femi Aziz scored twice in a 2-0 win over Oxford United. Middlesbrough, who struck within four minutes against Wrexham at the Racecourse Ground, slipped to fifth following a 2-2 draw, despite initially leading in their away fixture.
Southampton closed their campaign with a 3-1 victory at Preston North End, securing fourth place. The Championship play-offs will now feature Middlesbrough against Southampton over two legs, while Millwall face Hull City, after Hull’s season placed them in the other semi-final tie for promotion.
Season data highlighted Ipswich’s strong mentality and consistency at crucial moments. Excluding the curtailed 2019-20 League One season, Ipswich are unbeaten in their final league match across seven campaigns outside the Premier League, with five wins and two draws during that closing-day run.
Portman Road has also become a difficult venue for visiting teams. Ipswich have suffered only one defeat in their last 44 Championship home matches, winning 29 and drawing 14. They have not lost there in the league since a 3-0 reverse against Charlton Athletic in October, underlining their stability.
Shot data supported the margin of Ipswich’s win over QPR. Ipswich generated 2.05 expected goals from 14 attempts, while limiting QPR to 0.68 expected goals from 12 shots. That control, combined with clinical early finishing and defensive organisation, ensured Ipswich completed promotion back to the Premier League.
