Inter face rivals AC Milan in the latest Milan derby in Serie A, with Cristian Chivu’s side able to move 13 points clear at the top if Inter win. Milan, however, can secure a league double over Inter for the first time since 2010-11, during Massimiliano Allegri’s first spell.
Allegri stressed the special atmosphere, but underlined that the table remains the real focus. “The derby is always a special, special game. Its beautiful to play and experience,” Allegri said. “It will definitely be a great evening of sport. But, the three points in the derby are worth the same as the three points next Sunday.”
Inter arrive in the derby still dealing with European disappointment, after Bodo/Glimt knocked Inter out in the Champions League playoffs. Yet domestic form has been strong, and Inter have not lost in Serie A since a 1-0 defeat to Milan in November, which gives further weight to this clash.
That previous meeting was also part of Milan’s push to match a milestone last achieved under Allegri in 2010-11. Milan now have the chance to complete another league double over Inter, while also trying to slow Inter’s title charge, with the Scudetto moving closer for Chivu’s team.
| Fixture | Competition | Key Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Milan vs Inter | Serie A | Inter can go 13 points clear with a win |
| Inter vs Bodo/Glimt | Champions League playoffs | Inter eliminated from competition |
| Inter vs Milan | Serie A, November | Milan won 1-0, Inter’s last league defeat |
Inter now chase a piece of club history away from San Siro. Chivu’s side can record a 10th straight away win in Serie A, which Inter last managed between October 2006 and May 2007. That streak underlines why a derby victory would move Inter much closer to reclaiming the Scudetto.
While the title picture dominates discussion, Allegri also addressed reports linking Allegri with Real Madrid. Allegri rejected those suggestions, stressing a long-term plan with Milan after returning to the club in the summer and highlighting the current contract that runs until 2027.
“I’m linked to Milan until 2027. My future is tomorrow. I’m fine at Milan and I’m very happy,” Allegri added. “We only started the journey in July. The club is working for the future. But until we reach our goal, we will have to stay focused on the present. We haven’t achieved anything yet.”
Allegri expects a tough contest against the league leaders. “It’s important to pick up points tomorrow, it won’t be easy against a strong team. We know the importance of the game but we will try to get a result.” The comments underline Milan’s intent to compete with Inter despite the gap.
Chivu, meanwhile, pointed to a different turning point in Inter’s domestic campaign. The Inter head coach believes the crucial shift came not after the November defeat to Milan, but following a 2-2 draw with Napoli in January, which was followed by eight straight Serie A victories.
“Since the start of this year, we’ve improved and have a different approach to games, because we don’t underestimate or over-estimate anyone,” said Chivu. Milan have top individual players, but we must be the best version of ourselves. I expect consistency in all the good things we’ve done so far, and the way we reacted to a few defeats and disappointments, such as Bodo.
Inter’s coach also called for a bold attitude against Milan, aiming to attack despite the pressure of the derby and the recent European exit. Chivu wants Inter to maintain the mindset that produced the unbeaten league run and to handle setbacks without losing structure or focus on the title race.

The Milan derby in Serie A now brings together a league-leading Inter side chasing history and a Milan team seeking another double over the rivals. With European results, contract questions and title ambitions all present, both coaches stress focus on performance, as three important points sit at stake.
