In eight matches, Jasprit Bumrah has managed just two wickets, with an economy rate of 8.8. As he continues to struggle for impact, speculation is rife over whether he has overworked himself or is pushing through the IPL season under pressure. Meanwhile, his team, the Mumbai Indians, has already begun looking ahead, quietly working on plans to rebuild and revive their campaign for the next season.
But fans are bound to ask – what’s wrong with Jasprit Bumrah?
Bumrah simply isn’t picking up wickets the way he usually does in T20 cricket. With non-stop cricket and no real window to rest during the IPL, fatigue could well be catching up with him. He looks like a bowler who needs a break, yet one who cannot afford to step away because of his commitments to the Mumbai Indians.
Ironically, when Bumrah was in England and keen to play all five Test matches, the Board of Control for Cricket in India had stepped in to manage his workload. Now, the situation seems flipped – he might be craving rest, but the packed schedule and franchise obligations leave him with little room to pause.
And even as Jasprit Bumrah takes a bit of a hammering from relatively lesser-known names in the IPL, he hardly seems too bothered about it. For a bowler of his stature, a few off games don’t really shake the core.
Bumrah knows exactly where he stands in the game. His body of work, consistency over the years, and match-winning ability across formats give him that assurance. A lean patch in the IPL isn’t going to define him – and he understands that better than anyone.
If anything, this phase reflects a player who has little to prove. His reputation isn’t built on a handful of T20 games in a demanding, high-scoring league, but on sustained excellence at the highest level.
Conceding 54 runs in his four overs against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Jasprit Bumrah endured one of those rare off days – but it’s hardly the first time in his career that he’s been taken on. He has been through such phases before and knows how to respond.
What does seem increasingly likely, though, is that the selectors could opt to give him an extended break once the IPL concludes next month – a necessary pause to manage workload and ensure he returns refreshed for bigger assignments ahead.
