Como president Mirwan Suwarso says the club will not stand in Cesc Fabregas’ way if Chelsea offer the head coach role. Suwarso stresses Fabregas is free to decide the next step, even if that means returning to the Premier League with Chelsea.

Chelsea dismissed Liam Rosenior earlier this week after a run of five straight Premier League defeats. Fabregas is now among several candidates mentioned for the vacancy, with interest heightened by Fabregas’ strong connection to Chelsea from his playing days.

Fabregas took charge of Como in July 2024 on a four-year contract and has overseen an impressive season. Como sit fifth in Serie A, five points behind Juventus in the Champions League race, with five league games still to play as pressure and attention both increase.

The Spaniard’s coaching rise follows a decorated spell at Chelsea, where Fabregas made 198 appearances in all competitions. During that period, Fabregas lifted two Premier League titles, the FA Cup, the EFL Cup and the Europa League, achievements that strengthen Chelsea supporters’ interest in a possible reunion.

Suwarso outlined Como’s position when asked whether the club would like Fabregas to move to a Premier League side. Suwarso told City AM: “If that makes him happy, that’s him. You want your employees to stay with you for as long as possible, but at the end of the day, we don’t own him, and he’s free to go to Chelsea if he wishes.”

Suwarso also explained that Fabregas would be able to keep financial ties with Como, even if accepting work abroad. Suwarso said plans are ready for Fabregas to retain interests at the club, provided Fabregas does not depart to an Italian rival that competes directly with Como in Serie A.

Earlier this month, Fabregas publicly played down talk of an early exit from Como, stressing commitment to the project. Reports highlighted that Fabregas is very involved and feels strongly attached to the club, where Fabregas also holds a minority shareholding, adding a deeper connection beyond the coaching role.
