Morocco have named Mohamed Ouahbi as head coach, ending Walid Regragui’s successful spell in charge. The change comes three months before the 2026 World Cup, after a period that included Morocco’s historic World Cup semi-final and a home Africa Cup of Nations final earlier this year.
Ouahbi steps up from leading Morocco’s under-23 side and now prepares for a demanding World Cup group. Morocco will face Brazil, Scotland and Haiti this summer, with expectations high after recent achievements under Regragui and strong performances from key players such as Achraf Hakimi and Brahim Diaz.
Regragui confirmed that the decision for a new coach followed discussions about the squad’s future direction. “The team needs a fresh face, a different energy, and a new perspective with a new coach,” Regragui said. “I think the team needs a new lease of life before the World Cup, a new vision to continue progressing. My decision to leave is part of this team’s evolution.”
Regragui took charge of Morocco in 2022 and guided the Atlas Lions to a landmark World Cup. Morocco reached the semi-finals in Qatar, losing to eventual runners-up France, and became the first African nation to appear in the tournament’s last four. Earlier this year, Morocco hosted the Africa Cup of Nations and reached the final, losing to Senegal after Brahim Diaz missed a debated penalty.
Morocco’s upcoming World Cup fixtures underline the challenge awaiting Ouahbi and the squad.
