Pep Guardiola says Manchester City will lose more than a captain when Bernardo Silva leaves at the end of the season, admitting the midfielder’s exit feels personal as the club also prepares for a crucial Premier League title clash with Arsenal on Sunday.
Silva will depart nine years after joining from Monaco in 2017, during which the Portugal international became central to Manchester City’s success, collecting 15 major trophies and helping turn the club into a consistent title contender in both England and Europe.
Across his City career, Silva lifted six Premier League trophies, one Champions League, two FA Cups and five EFL Cups, with the latest of those coming in March after a 2-0 EFL Cup final win against Arsenal at Wembley, underlining Silva’s influence in high-pressure games.
That record leaves Silva and Guardiola sharing a vast haul of silverware, with Guardiola stressing their shared achievements as Manchester City still compete for two more trophies this season, including the current Premier League title race where City again meet Arsenal in a decisive encounter.

Silva reached a fresh landmark in Manchester City’s 3-0 victory at Chelsea, making a 297th Premier League appearance, the most by any Portuguese player in league history, and placing Silva second on City’s all-time Premier League appearances list behind David Silva, who played 309 league matches for the club.
The 31-year-old has produced 45 Premier League goals and 50 assists for Manchester City, numbers that highlight Silva’s consistent creativity and work-rate, with Guardiola viewing those statistics as part of a wider contribution that includes leadership, tactical discipline and reliable performances in different midfield and attacking roles.
Bernardo Silva departure emotion for Manchester City
Guardiola, whose own long-term future at Manchester City remains uncertain, described the emotional cost of seeing long-serving figures depart, placing Silva alongside other influential players who have shaped the club’s modern era and made Manchester City a regular challenger for domestic and European honours.
Guardiola told reporters: “When these types of players are going, and there have been many in the last years, part of myself is leaving too. It will be difficult imagining [the club] without him. He made an incredible statement for nine years and he has been massively, massively, massively important. Hopefully, we can deliver for him, [and] he’s going to help us. I know that. He’s a special player. Hopefully we can deliver a good month, a good few days, because he deserves it, he deserves the best. We’ve won 19 titles together, we are still challenging for two more and we are going for it, that’s for sure. We are looking forward to the start and do our best.”
Manchester City future beyond Bernardo Silva
Guardiola also reflected on wider squad changes at Manchester City, pointing out that several figures who were central to earlier title wins, including Ederson, Kevin De Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan, Kyle Walker and Manuel Akanji, are no longer present, leaving a changing group to handle the pressure of another Premier League run-in.
Guardiola highlighted that players such as Rayan Cherki have yet to secure a Premier League title, meaning key members of the current Manchester City side are entering unfamiliar territory in this stage of the season, and Guardiola accepts some responses under pressure cannot be predicted in advance.
The departure of Silva adds another layer of uncertainty as Manchester City chase more trophies, but Guardiola remains focused on using Silva’s final weeks at the club as extra motivation for the squad while the midfielder looks to close a decorated City spell with further success in the Premier League and beyond.
