Ahead of the current season of the ISL 2026, Chennaiyin FC acquired the services of Spanish midfielder Alberto Noguera. Coming through the youth system of Getafe, Noguera has become a household name in the Indian football circuit. Noguera’s odyssey with Indian football began with his stint at FC Goa, where he played under Clifford Miranda, the current head coach of Chennaiyin FC.
With the Gaurs, Noguera helped them win the Durand Cup in 2021. However, his most successful spell came at Mumbai City FC, where he lifted the 2022-23 ISL Shield before going on to win the ISL Cup in the 2023-24 season. The following year, he moved to Bengaluru FC. Operating as an advanced midfielder, Noguera played a crucial role in guiding the team to the final.
Subsequently, he switched sides to play for the Chennaiyin, partnering with Miranda once again. For Chennaiyin, the Spaniard has largely been deployed as a deep-line playmaker and has been majorly used for ball progression to the final thirds. Speaking about his journey, Noguera shared his journey in the ISL and the overall growth of Indian football in an exclusive interview with myKhel.
Alberto Shares Secret About Chennaiyin Mindset
Alberto emphasised that the team is not overly focused on opponents but instead on internal improvement. “Nothing special. We need to focus on ourselves. We know they will fight. I trust my team, and I’m sure they will do well,” he said.
He also addressed the squad’s mentality and confidence levels despite mixed results. “The mood and environment are good. We are confident that we can do much better. We are working very hard.”
Speaking about the team’s inconsistency in ISL 2026 so far, the Spaniard admitted that the pre-season was shortened for the side, which has caused this disruption. The team has managed to win just one game out of the six games played and has lost three games.
“We didn’t have much time to train at the beginning, it was a very short pre-season for us. But I think the club is getting better. We are improving in many things,” he said in a conversation with myKhl. “We are training very well in the last weeks, and hopefully we will get the results that we deserve,” the Spanish player added.
Workload Management And Match Fitness
When asked about match fitness and mental preparation, Noguera said that he is happy to get the required minutes at Chennaiyin. In the six matches that Chennaiyin has played, Noguera has played all the minutes for his side.”I’m happy that I played all the minutes. I will try to keep doing the same,” he said.
He also highlighted key areas that need work, saying the team must strengthen both attack and defence, add more goals, and cut down on goals conceded.
“India Can Play In World Cup”- Noguera’s Bold Belief
Alberto also shared his views on the development of Indian football through the Indian Super League (Indian Super League), saying the standard has improved significantly in recent years.
“From my first year to now, things are getting better. The level has improved a lot,” he said. “India has a great future if they continue improving and doesn’t stop the progress.”
He stressed the importance of academies and grassroots development in shaping future talent. “Grassroots is very important everywhere. Young players need to come through the system if you want long-term success.” He further expressed strong optimism about the growth of Indian football, stating that the country has “great potential” and can emerge as one of Asia’s leading football nations in the future.
Looking at India’s long-term football ambitions, Alberto expressed belief that the national team can eventually qualify for the FIFA World Cup. “I’m always thinking India has good chances to qualify. The national team has great players and is improving a lot,” he said. “If they keep pushing, they will do it. India can become one of the biggest football nations in Asia.”
He also reflected on the broader structural challenge of cricket’s dominance, but insisted football can still grow significantly with proper support from governing bodies and clubs.
Alberto’s WC Prediction For Spain
Ending on a lighter note, Alberto also reflected on his early football journey in Spain and his ties with clubs such as Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid. He also made a confident statement ahead of the FIFA World Cup, saying, “We will win the World Cup. I’m sure about it,” while referring to Spain’s prospects in the tournament.
