West Ham eased relegation pressure with a dominant 4-0 Premier League victory over Wolves at London Stadium, lifting the team out of the bottom three and above rivals Tottenham, as Konstantinos Mavropanos and Valentin Castellanos each scored twice in what Mavropanos later described as a perfect all-round performance.
The win means West Ham will end the night outside the relegation places for only the second time in 2026, matching 14 March, while also increasing pressure on Spurs, who play Sunderland on Sunday in Roberto De Zerbi’s first match in charge and now risk being overtaken further.
Analytical data underlined West Ham’s control of the match, with an expected goals figure of 1.68 from 18 attempts, seven on target, while Wolves produced an xG of only 0.61 from 14 shots, highlighting how efficiently Nuno Espirito Santo’s side converted pressure into chances in a crucial relegation battle.
Opta’s supercomputer reacted to the result by giving West Ham a 54.7% probability of avoiding relegation before the rest of the weekend fixtures, which include Nottingham Forest against Aston Villa and Leeds United visiting Manchester United on Monday, though Nuno stressed that the team cannot become complacent despite improved numbers.
After a tense opening period, the breakthrough arrived just before half-time when Mavropanos met Jarrod Bowen’s corner and headed beyond Jose Sa, easing nerves among the home support, then Castellanos struck twice after the interval, either side of an extended Wolves spell that brought pressure but few clear situations.
Castellanos’ first goal came when Pablo produced a clever flick in the penalty area, allowing Castellanos to stab the ball past Sa, and less than two minutes later the forward added another finish to stretch the scoreline, before Mavropanos completed the 4-0 result with an acrobatic close-range effort on 83 minutes.
Mavropanos now has three goals across West Ham’s last three Premier League matches, a sharp contrast to the single goal recorded in the defender’s first 81 league appearances combined for West Ham and former club Arsenal, underlining a striking upturn in attacking output at a key stage of the campaign.
West Ham Premier League relegation battle and recent form trends
The victory continued an encouraging Premier League run for Nuno’s squad, with West Ham now recording five wins from the last 11 league fixtures, alongside three draws and three defeats, and since the sequence began against Spurs on 17 January, only Manchester United and Arsenal have gained more points.

Since, and including, the first game in this run against Spurs on January 17, only Manchester United (23) and Arsenal (21) have won more points than the Hammers (18).
These kinds of wins give us a big boost for the rest of the season because we have been working really hard, Mavropanos told Sky Sports. We have got some really good results in the past games and today again we saw a great effort by our fans at home, a clean sheet. I think it was a perfect performance. We said that we have to stay calm throughout the game because Wolves have some good players. We stuck together and scored the first goal and in the second half we saw more of our work, and we scored more goals.
Nuno highlighted the attitude shown by the players after full-time, noting that the performance reinforced internal belief during the relegation fight, and the coach also pointed out that, despite the scale of the result, the squad must still address several issues as the season reaches its final weeks.
We spoke after the game and the way we did it tonight proved to ourselves that we cannot give up, Nuno added. That was the team spirit from the beginning. Never give up, we are in the fight. I realise we have a lot of work to do yet. We made a big step today, important for us, but nothing has changed.
West Ham’s largest Premier League win since a 4-0 success over Bournemouth in April 2023 arrived at a significant moment, improving survival chances, lifting confidence in defence with a clean sheet, and leaving the team better placed for the remaining fixtures in a tightly contested relegation battle.
