Former Arsenal, Juventus, and Wales midfielder Aaron Ramsey officially announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 35.
The Welsh international, who made over 600 club appearances and earned 86 caps for his country, brought the curtain down on a 20-year career that spanned boyhood club Cardiff City, Arsenal, Juventus, Rangers, Nice, a return to Cardiff, and a brief stint with Mexico’s Pumas UNAM.
In an emotional statement, Ramsey said: “This has not been an easy decision to make. After a lot of consideration, I have decided to retire from football. It has been my privilege to wear the Welsh shirt and experience so many incredible moments in it.”
Despite battling persistent injuries, Ramsey’s legacy as a dynamic, box-to-box midfielder endures. He won three FA Cups with Arsenal and played a pivotal role in Wales’ historic run to the Euro 2016 semi-finals. As tributes pour in from fans and former teammates, here are five of the greatest moments that defined his remarkable career.
1. FA Cup Final Heroics vs Hull City (2014)
Ramsey etched his name into Arsenal folklore during the 2014 FA Cup Final at Wembley. Trailing 2-0 to Hull City at half-time, Arsenal mounted a dramatic comeback. Ramsey scored a crucial goal that helped turn the tide, contributing to the Gunners’ 3-2 victory and ending a nine-year trophy drought. It was his first major honour and a symbol of resilience after a horrific leg fracture in 2010 that nearly ended his career.
2. Winning Goal in the 2017 FA Cup Final vs Chelsea
Three years later, Ramsey delivered again on the biggest stage. In the 2017 FA Cup Final against Chelsea, he rose to head home what proved to be the winner just minutes after Chelsea had equalised. Arsenal lifted the trophy for the third time in four years, and Ramsey’s clinical finish cemented his reputation as a big-game player. He remains one of the few players to score in two FA Cup finals.
3. Breathtaking Champions League Volley vs Galatasaray (2014)
One of the purest strikes of Ramsey’s career came in the Champions League. With the ball headed out, Ramsey unleashed a thunderous left-foot volley from 25 yards that flew into the top corner. The goal, scored against Galatasaray, was hailed as one of the greatest in Arsenal’s modern European history and showcased his technical brilliance and composure under pressure.
4. Euro 2016 Quarter-Final Masterclass vs Belgium
Ramsey’s finest hour in international football arrived during Wales’ unforgettable Euro 2016 campaign. As a key figure alongside Gareth Bale, he produced a goal and multiple assists, including a standout performance in the quarter-final victory over Belgium. Wales reached the semi-finals for the first time in their history, and Ramsey’s leadership and creativity earned him a place in UEFA’s Team of the Tournament.
5. Emotional Return to Cardiff and Final Chapter
After glittering spells abroad, Ramsey returned to his boyhood club Cardiff City in 2022. Though injuries limited his appearances, the move represented a full-circle moment for the Caerphilly-born star. His final professional outings, including a short but memorable stint in Mexico, underscored his enduring passion for the game right until the end.
Aaron Ramsey’s career was defined by tenacity, flair, and loyalty. From overcoming a career-threatening injury to inspiring a nation, his five standout moments capture the essence of a true Welsh footballing legend.
“I joined Arsenal as a boy, I leave as a Man,” an emotional Ramsey said when he left the Gunners back in 2019. And as he takes the next step after football, he shall forever remain a legend at North London.
