April 6 (UPI) — Firefighters in Arizona responded to a canal where a donkey had somehow wandered in and became trapped in the water.
The Eloy Fire District said crews responded to the Central Arizona Project canal near Highway 87 and Shedd Road in Eloy on an animal rescue call.
“Crews arrived and found the donkey stuck in the water and struggling to free itself,” the fire district said on social media.
Battalion Chief Travis Hartman and firefighter Hannah Hartman, who are father and daughter, put their livestock experience to good use and led the crews in using ropes and vehicles to pull the donkey to safety.
“We train regularly in rope and hauling techniques, but this was a unique situation,” Fire District Assistant Chief Robert Maestas told The Arizona Republic.
The donkey was placed in the care of a local livestock expert while officials attempt to identify its owner.
