March 19 (UPI) — Detroit Pistons guard Cade Cunningham sustained a collapsed lung and will miss at least two weeks of play, the team announced Thursday.
Cunningham appeared to sustain the injury when he dove for a loose ball and collided with guard Tre Johnson in the first quarter of a 130-117 win over the Washington Wizards on Tuesday in Washington, D.C.
He checked out about a minute later and did not return. The Pistons, who initially explained Cunningham was ruled out because of back spasms, said later he was diagnosed with a left lung pneumothorax. He will be re-evaluated at the end of his two-week absence.
The two-time All-Star averaged 24.5 points, 9.9 assists, 5.6 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game through his first 61 starts this season.
The Pistons (49-19) went 5-5 over their last 10 games, but remain in first place in the Eastern Conference. They lead the second-place Boston Celtics (46-23) by 3.5 games.
The Pistons will take on the Wizards (16-52) again at 7 p.m. EDT Thursday in Washington.
